Chronic Pain? Medical Cannabis Can Help! Learn How.

To be able to obtain your Missouri Medical Marijuana card, a state-licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.) must attest that you qualify for it. Among the list of conditions that qualify for the medical marijuana card in Missouri, includes, item E:

E. A chronic medical condition that causes severe, persistent pain or persistent muscle spasms, including but not limited to those associated with multiple sclerosis, seizures, Parkinson’s disease, and Tourette’s syndrome;

Item E is another great liberal category for the residents of Missouri. The state is allowing the use of medical marijuana to treat a symptom of disease (i.e., pain) as opposed to the disease itself (multiple sclerosis).

From a functional medicine standpoint, this is ideal. The symptom is the signal, usually released at the site needing attention. For example, the pain from a migraine is caused by smooth muscle spasms of the arteries of the brain or vasospasms; which results in the characteristic pulsatile or throbbing pain migraine sufferers know all too well.

As you can see from the chart below, CBD, d9-THCa, d9-THC, d8-THC, CBC, CBG are all beneficial for pain and CBD and THC for vasospasm and other symptoms of migraine like nausea in particular. Additionally, pain associated with diabetes or MS is the result of nerve pain and the same phytocannabinoid compounds, in a different ratio, maybe needed to treat nerve pain. A symptom approach with an adaptogenic herb like cannabis can truly address the underlying problem at the root and balance the body -- whatever the source of pain.

With new research emerging, it is found that the optimal ratio of relieving pain symptoms of varying etiologies is a ratio of CBD:THC in a 1:1 ratio.  Meaning for every 1 part of CBD, 1 part of THC is needed to maximize the healing and pain relieving effects.

As you can see from the chart, having a medical marijuana strain that has a proportionate ratio of CBD, THCa, THC, d8-THC, CBCa, CBC, CBGa, CBDa can provide maximum relief for pain.  Medicine can transition from a “pill for every ill” to a universal plant, just altering the ratio of active ingredients and terpenes and mode of ingestion.

Additionally, certain terpenes, of the cannabis plant can provide additional medicinal benefits and pain relief such as β-Caryophyllene.  This terpene is more commonly known as the “active ingredient” in the essential oils such as clove, rosemary, cinnamon, and basil.  β-Caryophyllene is the chemical compound that has therapeutic properties of decreasing inflammation, improving pain, relaxing nerves and improving sleep.  β-Caryophyllene is also naturally occurring in certain strains of cannabis plants.  It would be that cannabis plant with a favorable 1:1 ratio of CBD:THC phytocannabinoids, and terpenes associated with anti-inflammatory and pain modulating effects, like β-Caryophyllene, that would be the ideal form of medicinal marijuana in chronic pain conditions.

Since creating Radiance Float + Wellness, my mission was to offer natural health and wellness options to those primarily seeking treatment and preventive care while optimizing mental and physical health.  The use of hemp and cannabis medicine along with the natural healing services at Radiance Float + Wellness, brings rapid relief and well-being to the body, mind and soul!

With a 1:1 ratio and needing higher levels of THC, psychoactivity is a possibility.  One can vary the mode and timing of ingestion to maximize benefits and reducing side effects.  Stay tuned for another post about various ways to consume medical marijuana and get medicated!

When seeking your medical marijuana card in order to manage chronic pain conditions, make sure to make an appointment with Dr. Z or another healthcity doctor who can help you make appropriate decisions at the dispensary.  Our Guideright assessment can also help provide documentation and track improvement of pain symptoms. During the appointment, we will review your treatment goals and find some appropriate strains, review ratio and mode of use of cannabis medicine.  You will receive a physician certification attesting that medical marijuana is deemed helpful in your condition under Amendment #2. Upon receiving your card from the State of Missouri DHSS, you will be allowed to purchase 4 oz of medical marijuana from dispensaries each month, and/or grow 6 plants for personal medicinal use.
