The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an “organ system” similar to the respiratory or digestive system in the body.
Centuries and centuries went by without any knowledge of this system or its purpose. When it was discovered, in 1990, its physiological mechanism was also discovered and scientists proclaim that the ECS is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health- which is homeostasis, or bringing balance to the body.
The ECS is comprised of endocannabinoids or neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors. The ECS receptors are mainly located within the central nervous system (CNS) up and down the brain and spinal cord. There are also ECS receptors in our immune system organs like the thymus, lymph nodes and the gut and in our endocrine system, as well.
Our endocannabinoid system responds to our natural endocannabinoids (cannabinoids that are produced INSIDE our body), like anandamide and 2-AG, as well as phytocannabinoids (the cannabinoids that are found in plants such as hemp and cannabis and include CBD, CBN and THC. THC, CBD, CBN, CBC, CBG and more yet to be identified are phytocannabinoids that mimic the structure and function of our endocannabinoids. Supplementation or treatment with phytocannabinoids will activate the ECS and bring our body into balance.
We are finding as with any other plant nutrient, we can have deficiencies. In these conditions, patients can take supplements with phytocannabinoids and use methods to increase our endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids).
Scientists are confirming that conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraines, PTSD, IBS and more are endocannabinoid deficiency states, we need to correct this deficiency to achieve optimal health.
In order to correct these deficiencies, a supplement in its most natural form is ideal. An organic, full-spectrum hemp or cannabis oil with third party tested absorption will support and activate our ECS, (all vertebral animals have an ECS system, therefore it's great for our fur babies too!).
Cannabinoids have been shown to be helpful in various conditions including: seizures, mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders and substance abuse; chronic pain conditions, especially neurological and inflammatory pain, gut issues including nausea and IBS, insomnia, skin conditions and many more.
